Hello! Do you have a K-8th grader who is interested in participating in a low-stakes and fun chess tournament? Chess Club Coffee's Scholastic (K-8) Saturdays are a great way to have fun, gain tournament experience, and engage with a community of like-minded chess enthusiasts. This event is free to enter, and the winner will receive Chess Club Coffee merchandise.

This is a one-day event, consisting of up to 4 rounds, depending on the number of participants.

Streaming Disclaimer: No audio or visual component of the in-person event will be broadcast. We will, however, be live streaming the top board's game on Twitch using a DGT smart board, with the player's first name and first initial. The stream will only consist of the state of the board at any given moment, without images, audio, or video of the players.

Event Description

  • Dates: August 22nd, 2026

  • Location: Chess Club Coffee, 3144 W Irving Park Rd, Chicago, IL 60618

  • Format: Up to 4 rounds Swiss, one K-8 Open section

  • Time control: G/25;+10 (25 minutes with a 10-second increment)

  • Check-in period: Saturday, August 22nd • 9:00 – 9:45am (late check-ins will not be paired for round one)

  • Round times:

    • Saturday, August 22nd

      • 10:00am • Round 1

      • Rounds 2-4 will begin as soon as possible, once all the prior round's games have ended, and the players are ready for the next round

      • There will also be a 15-minute lunch break after Round 2

  • Prize:

    • Chess Club Coffee hat

  • Registration details:

    • Entry fee: Free

    • Registration closes Friday, August 21st at 11:59pm

    • Limited entry onsite–please register online if possible

    • Space is limited to 16 participants

  • Rating & Membership: This event is unrated and no membership is required to participate.

  • Byes: One half-point bye available if requested before round 1

  • Parking: Paid and free street parking is available in the vicinity of the building.
